FINANCIAL LITERACY CAMP TEACHES
TEENS TO BUILD WEALTH
Raritan Valley Community College Offers New
Program for Teens
June 30–July 2, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
(May 12, 2008) Teaching teenagers the value of
money is becoming increasingly important as middle
class families find it harder to make ends meet,
teens demand more independence at the mall and
college students rack up more debt than ever
before. According to a USA Today survey, 78
percent of teens want to learn more about the
financial basics so that they can make smarter
decisions. From June 30 through July 2, Raritan
Valley Community College will offer a new Youth
Program that might be just what the doctor ordered.
Financial Literacy Camp for Teens (formerly The
Money Camp) uses fun, interactive games and
exercises that help teens learn how to manage
money. The Camp is designed to teach teens age
13–17 smart money management skills, from
opening a bank account to how to think like a
millionaire.
“Young people are not taught to value money, but
they have a lot of say over how their parents’
money is spent,” according to Ken Carter, founder
of Working Your Money, which teaches financial
literacy to adults, teens and kids. Carter has been a
licensed real estate professional in New Jersey
since 1983. He will be leading the Financial Literacy
Camp for Teens.
Carter says teens will learn about the history of
money, what role it plays in our daily lives, and how
to have a healthy relationship with money – right
from the start. “At the end of the program, they will
be equipped to be financially independent future
leaders and compassionate philanthropists.”
